INTERNET POPULATION HITS NEW HIGH

INTERNET POPULATION HITS NEW HIGH (SiliconValley.com, 26 April 2006)
-- The U.S. online population has hit an all-time high: 73 percent of
adults, or 147 million, now use the Internet. The figures represent
an increase from 66 percent, or 133 million adults, in January 2005,
according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. But only 42
percent of all adults, or 84 million, have the home high-speed
connections important for viewing video and treating the Internet as
an always-on reference. Looking only at home Internet users, 62
percent have broadband. In a report Wednesday, Pew noted that
Internet use still varies with age and income. Eighty-eight percent
of adults under 30 go online, compared with 32 percent for those age
65 and older. Only 53 percent of adults in households earning less
than $30,000 a year use the Internet, compared with 91 percent in
households with annual income exceeding $75,000. http://

ODR Colloquy in Conflict Resolution Quarterly

Melissa Conley-Tyler and Susan Raines guest edited a special colloquy on ODR in the latest Conflict Resolution Quarterly. Articles include:

"Colloquy: The human face of on-line dispute resolution" by Melissa Conley Tyler, Susan S. Raines, "Keeping pace: On-line technology and ADR services" by David Syme, "Mediating in your pajamas: The benefits and challenges for ODR practitioners" by Susan S. Raines, "Transforming landscapes: Forging new ODR systems with a human face" by Sanjana Hattotuwa, and "Accreditation of on-line dispute resolution practitioners" by Melissa Conley Tyler and Jackie Bornstein.

It's a great contribution to the scholarship in the field, and very well done. I highly recommend you check the articles out.

ICT4Peace

Sanjana Hattotuwa, a pioneer in the Online Dispute Resolution field, has started up a blog called “ICT for Peacebuilding” that explores the use of technology for conflict transformation. As he explains in his first post:

“I think this is a very important field of study - embryonic, but showing great promise to positively influence the fields of conflict transformation and peacebuilding in the future. My work and research over the past couple of years has engaged with the complexity of ICT support structures for peacebuilding - a fascinating and deeply frustrating field of work and study.

This blog aims to flesh out some of this research and experience alongside comparable and similar experiences of others thinking about or actually using ICT for peacebuilding.”

The leading French online mediation provider has just published its statistics:
Since September 2004 (on which date MediateurDuNet became available to the public and thus properly operational), 7,474 cases have been filed, out of which 3,830 have been administered.

Most cases cases relate to e-commerce or ISPs. Copyright, privacy and defamation cases are also admissible.

MediateurDuNet only takes B2C or C2C (or, outside of e-commerce P2P) cases.

The current run rate of MediateurDuNet is now of approximately 100 cases a week.
