ODR Seminar at UMass-Boston in mid-June
I'm teaching "Online Dispute Resolution: The State of the Art" at my alma mater, UMass-Boston, on Wednesday, June 13th, right before eBay Live the next day.
Here's the description from the UMass-Boston website:
"Online Dispute Resolution [ODR] is the hottest area of the ADR field right now. But it is still in its infancy, and there are many questions about how and when to apply ODR to disputes. Do the rules of offline ADR apply to ODR? How does technology change the equation? Can ODR be effective when parties are not looking into the other side’s eyes? How can offline neutrals best translate their skills online? How can ODR compliment ADR?
In this Seminar we’ll examine the development of ODR, think through some of the new challenges it poses to neutrals and systems designers, and look at the major providers, administrative agencies, and international organizations currently involved. We’ll also get to try out state-of-the-art ODR technologies through a series of simulations, and to begin to wrestle with the challenges of providing effective dispute resolution online."
Schedule, Location, and Fee
Wednesday June 13; 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Taylor Center, Wheatley Building , UMass Boston; 3rd floor

New paper on asymmetrical negotiations by Jim Ring
We in the ODR world have talked a lot about blind bidding over the years, and I'm sure that conversation will continue in Liverpool, especially since Charlie Bronfman, the co-founder of Cybersettle, will be in attendance. However, today I was notified about a new paper discussing asymmetrical direct negotiation processes, and I think it will also generate a lot of interesting conversation in Liverpool. I believe that precepts of symmetry sometimes hold a lot of sway in dispute resolution systems design, even when they don't necessarily correlate with fairness or mutually acceptable outcomes. "Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Approaches to Non-Cooperative Bargaining," by Jim Ring of Appellex, thinks through that issue with great focus and clarity.
